Tuesday November 18th 2008-

Looking at recent results I must admit I was a little concerned that we (the Vics) were beginning to hit that dreaded sticky patch that every club seems to go through over the course of the season. With a loss to Goldborne and a draw against Poynton it seemed like the cup ties against the likes of Barrow were having a detrimental effect. But, in true Tarporley Vics style we seemed to have showed great character and proved just how well the club is progressing with an emphatic 4-0 win against a side who simply tore us apart in our first season in the Mid-Cheshire, so well done lads. A shame we couldn’t back that up with our first win against Warrington Town.

As for me, I have had an interesting few weeks. I have found myself a team- the Austin Ballers, although the season has just finished. They did make it to the state finals though which apparently is a good standard- the equivalent of the Cheshire cup, so I believe. I will be hoping to make my debut in the next few weeks and have my first training session with them tonight, but I haven’t played for nearly six months now!

Since I last reported on the River City Rangers we have won only once, losing five straight games. But, as the academy director highlights, at this level results do not count. The drive really is towards improving individual skill level whilst at the same time encouraging the development of team and social interaction. So, imagine my delight when one of my girls turns inside our own box towards our goal and slots the ball coolly between the legs of our Goal Keeper having only been on the field for 2-3 minutes….It was, of course a back pass, but from only two yards out, golly, we do have some decision making issues to resolve at practice!

I was, however, happy to see that she had realized what had happened and as she punched thin air and stamped on the ground I knew that her performance would improve through sheer determination. For the remainder of the game she seemed a completely new player, with a Stevie Wright ‘no dangle’ type attitude she rolled up her sleeves and got stuck in! Good girl. We drew our last game in what is considered our derby against the other Academy associated with the club. Our first clean sheet! We have our first tournament in San Antonio, about two hours south of Austin this weekend so I shall give you an update on how that goes…..

Of late, I have calmed down in terms of nightlife concentrating mostly on my career…However, my inability to say no has led me into a few predicaments. Halloween is absolutely massive over here and is especially big down on sixth street, arguably the best night out in the whole of Texas. There was not a single person from around the 1 million who hit sixth street that night who was not in fancy dress! The girls (the good looking ones) barely covered and dressed as anything from 80’s disco divas with leg warmers and all, to CJ Parker from Baywatch, to traditional Halloween attire such as naughty Goths and voluptuous vampires. And the boys, anything from super heroes, to where’s Walley, to Ginger Bread Men….But me, I wanted to stand out. So Oompa Lumpa’s it was…covered in orange body paint from head to toe with a James Brown style wig in a lovely green, a white vest and green and white stripy shorts. Classic. A few Panda Pops were knocked back at my place and off we went to paint the town orange!

The response we got was amazing, everyone wanted to have their picture taken with us, we got free drinks and we even saw Willy Wonka…needless to say he got absolutely bullied. The crowds were even joining in abusing him and to be honest, I think we ruined the poor lads night, especially when some one smashed his hat off his head and stamped all over it!

Unbelievably, a lot of very attractive girls seem to have fetishes for little orange men, it must be a childhood thing…but Luke, if you haven’t yet thought about coming over, you should…you’d clean up! And so, the next day. I awoke in a mass of orange bed sheets with green hair stuck to my face and I had to rush off to my River City game having over slept…

Following the game I spent no less then two hours cleaning orange body paint off the walls, doors, fridge, sink, ice machine, toilet, kitchen surfaces, everywhere! It was only then that I learned of one of my oompa friends who had had a rather successful night…in my flat mates bed, who just happened to be out of town. Despite running his sheets through the washer twice, there was still an ominous orange stain. I simply turned the sheets over and hoped for the best, nobody has mentioned it to me since but my flat mate hasn’t actually spoken to me for the past two weeks so something tells me he may know.

On the work side of things, I’m doing quite well despite having to make up for my predecessors short comings. I have in the last two months been all over Texas doing presentations and have so far driven 7 thousand miles! I spent most of last week down in Brownsville, Rio Valley which is in the deep south east of Texas right on the border of Mexico. My current visa expired the day after we got back so we were hoping we wouldn’t run into border patrol... But it wasn’t to be and we met a road block just an hour into our journey home. Since I did still have a day left there was nothing they could do but they did insist that I leave the country by midnight Saturday.

Anyway, I’ll update again before Christmas and hopefully I will have made my debut for the Austin Ballers.

Good luck on Saturday boys!
